  Beijing meetings provide vital guidance to GEOSS implementation

As we look back upon the successful conclusion of the Beijing Ministerial Summit and GEO-VII Plenary, I would like to thank all of the participants for their energetic contributions to these meetings and for their continuing support to GEO and to GEOSS implementation. The Beijing conference of 3 – 5 November met all expectations thanks to a year of intensive preparation. Continued
   
  Implementing the Data Sharing Principles
  Recognizing that the societal benefits of Earth observations cannot be achieved without data sharing, the 2007 Cape Town Declaration launched a process for ensuring that the GEOSS Data Sharing Principles, which are a major GEO achievement, are translated into reality. The resulting Data Sharing Action Plan and the GEOSS Data-CORE were adopted in Beijing. They promise to strengthen GEOSS significantly by advancing the practical implementation of the Data Sharing Principles. Continued
   
  Launching the Global Forest Observation Initiative (GFOI)
  GEO’s forest carbon tracking activities received strong and unanimous support in Beijing, and they are set to accelerate over the coming year with the establishment of the Global Forest Observation Initiative. Governments also recognized the contribution that this GEO-initiated activity can make to the REDD-plus Partnership, the Climate Change Convention, biodiversity protection, and other forest-related activities.   GEO BON receives mandate from biodiversity convention
  A number of speakers in Beijing highlighted the GEO Biodiversity Observation Network as an excellent example of how GEOSS can reach out to the users of Earth observations and address the international political agenda. Further evidence for this view was provided by the Nagoya meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which concluded just one week before the GEO Ministerial. Continued
