The secondment term is two years renewable for a further year. Virtual secondments may be considered, noting that costs relating to travel to the GEO Secretariat (approximately three visits per year), the GEO Plenary and other Technical meetings are to be covered by the home institution.

Internships

Call for Expression of interest:  Internships

The GEO Secretariat has the following internship possibilities available:

Title: Data Processing Intern
Ref: GEO/Call for Internships/18-04-DP
Post Level: Intern (unpaid)
Duty Station: Geneva, Switzerland
Period: 3-6 months
Anticipated Start date: As soon as possible.

Overview:

The Group on Earth Observations Secretariat is looking for a Data Processing Intern to join their team in Geneva at the World Meteorological Organization.
Under the supervision of the  Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and the IT Manager, the intern will primarily be responsible for processing data related to the monitoring of GEO Work Programme activities, organizational profiles, GEO community contacts, including GEO Leadership data.
Duties will include:

  • Reviewing and cleaning datasets in preparation for data processing;
  • Performing internet searches or emailing contacts to obtain missing information about individuals and organizations;
  • Applying pre-defined data taxonomies to categorize existing and newly collected data;
  • Updating databases;
  • Preparing exploratory analyses; and
  • Carrying out other tasks as requested.

Desired skills include:

  • Understanding of the principles of data management.
  • Experience in collecting, managing and analysing data (including in the context of university course requirements).
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel.

Purpose:

The purpose of the internship is to provide interns with the opportunity to acquire experience and first-hand knowledge of GEO, enhance their educational experience through practical work experience and to provide GEO with the assistance of qualified students.

Eligibility:

GEO Internships are open to students that have recently graduated (preferably at the Post Graduate level) or those approaching the end of their post graduate studies and preparing a thesis. The minimum age is 21 and maximum age 35. Internships can be of three to six months’ duration.

Educational Requirements:

Applicants should be enrolled in or recently graduated from a university level programme in the following fields: Data Science, Information Management, Computer Science or other field involving working with qualitative and quantitative data. Additional qualifications in related science subjects such as Earth Sciences, Geography, International Development Studies etc. are a bonus.

Language Requirements:

Good ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English is required for this post.

Remuneration and Costs:

Internships are not paid and thus at no cost to the Organization. Travel costs, travel arrangement and finding living accommodation are the responsibility of the intern, or their sponsoring institution, if that is the case. Interns must have adequate medical insurance coverage and provide a certificate of good health. Interns are not considered as GEO officials.

Title: Data Management Principles Compliance Testing Intern

Overview:

The Group on Earth Observations Secretariat is looking for a Data Management Principles Compliance testing Intern to join their team in Geneva at the World Meteorological Organization.
Reporting to the Data Sharing Expert, the intern will primarily be responsible for delivering technical test on data resources in the GEOSS Platform
Duties will include:

  • Testing the GEO Data Management Principles compliance of data providers to the GEOSS Platform
  • Compiling training materials on data management contributed by GEO Members and Participating Organization
  • Supporting the update of Open EO Data (including data sharing and data management) page on GEO website and development of outreach materials
  • Carrying out other tasks as requested.

Desired skills include:

  • Knowledge and/or experience on life-cycle data management
  • Data mining and analysis skills.
