About GSNL

Introduction

GEO Geohazards Supersites and Natural Laboratories (GSNL) is an initiative of the geohazard scientific community. The GSNL initiative provides access to spaceborne and in-situ geophysical data of selected sites prone to earthquake, volcano or other hazards. The initiative began with the "Frascati declaration" at the conclusion of the 3rd International Geohazards workshop of GEO held in November 2007 in Frascati, Italy. The recommendation of the workshop was "to stimulate an international and intergovernmental effort to monitor and study selected reference sites by establishing open access to relevant datasets according to GEO principles to foster the collaboration between all various partners and end-users". This recommendation is formalized in the GEO Work Plan as Component 2 of the GEO task DI-01.

Governance structure

GSNL governance is built upon a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the CEOS Data Coordination Team (DCT), including Space Agencies data providers. In addition, each Supersite or Natural Laboratory is represented in the governance of GSNL through a Point of Contact (PoC). The SAC consists of representatives for the observation techniques (seismology, GPS and InSAR), regions (Europe/Africa, Asia, Oceania, Americas) and infrastructure (seismology, geodesy). (see GSNL documents for further information)

GSNL News

September 15, 2014

Stefano Salvi presented the status of the GSNL initiative at the II Meeting of the CEOS Working Group on Disasters, in Paris. It has been agreed that GSNL will coordinate with the CEOS Seismic and Volcanic pilots on EO data requests, to avoid overlaps and acquisition conflicts.

DLR has implemented a Supersite data portal, accessible through registration at https://supersites.eoc.dlr.de/. It still a beta version, but scientists are invited to test it and give feedbacks to Stefano Salvi. Through the portal you should be able, after the acceptance and signature of the license file, to download TerraSAR X data acquired for all Supersites.

ESA and ASI are going to work together to implement web services for the discovery of the COSMO-SkyMed data, to be accessed then by a procedure similar to DLR data.

ESA is continuing the development of the Exploitation Platform dedicated to Geohazards, and GSNL science teams are waiting to be able to use it to process Sentinel-1 and contributing mission data.

UNAVCO is now providing scientists with an easy access to EO data through the UNAVCO data portal. COSMO-SkyMed data for the Sinabung eruption Event Supersite (Sumatra), are vailable from here

September 10, 2014

Two new Candidate Supersites are going to be formally approved at the next CEOS Plenary: the Ecuadorian volcanoes and the New Zealand volcanoes.

September 3, 2014

Two new Event Supersite proposals have been submitted in August and September 2014:

  • The August 3rd Ludian Earthquake (China) - this proposal has been formally recommended by Falk Amelung. The current SAC Chair requested additional details on in situ data availability, but recommended in the meantime the proposal for submission to the CEOS DCT. A positive response from DLR has come, subjected however to in situ data to be equally freely available for international scientists as EO data.

Event Supersites

Event Supersites are geographic regions of the world which have been affected by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions of particularly relevant magnitude or impact.

Event Supersites are proposed by a team including the global and local scientific community and local end-users.

If approved by the CEOS DCT, they receive satellite image data for the scientific investigation of the source and of the effects of the event. Event Supersites are typically active only for few months.

This page contains the links to web pages reporting on data and scientific results obtained for past Event Supersites.

Web pages for the events established before 2015 were migrated here from a previous Supersite website created and managed by UNAVCO.  The GSNL Chair, SAC, and all participants are indebted with UNAVCO for its support to the initial phase of the initiative, and for continuing to host Supersite image data on its servers.
