Electricity and Water Supply

The voltage in Japan is 110 volts (60 cycles). The plug type is the "A-type", the one with two flat pins. Tap water is safe to drink, but bottled water is widely available.


In Japan, there is no general prohibition on smoking in public areas. Bars and restaurants are divided into smoking and nonsmoking zones. Smoking is prohibited inside theaters, museums and other cultural or educational institutions (designated areas are usually provided for smokers).

Credit Cards

Credit cards may be accepted in large hotels, shopping centers and restaurants whereas smaller shops cannot accept credit cards. Credit card users are advised to check before paying the bills.

Currency and ATMs

The official currency of Japan is the YEN. All payments must be made in Japanese YEN so it is necessary for visitors to change other currencies into YEN in order to make cash payments. Currency exchange points are located at any airport, Exchange rates and service fees vary. It is also possible to use ATMs located in banks, hotels, and large shopping centers.

Mobile Phones Information
