In Memory: Doug Nebert, US Geological Survey and GEO
The GEO community mourns the sudden passing of Doug Nebert, of the US Geological Survey, in a plane crash in Oregon, USA this past Saturday. Doug had an exemplary career at USGS which spanned more than 30 years. In the GEO community, Doug was a key leader in developing the GEOSS Common Infrastructure, helping to bring the original concepts to fruition. He was viewed as a guide, teacher and trusted partner and his contributions to GEO will be forever appreciated.
Doug is remembered by his USGS peers and colleagues as committed to furthering the availability and use of geospatial and mapping technologies to address important global environmental issues. Doug was known for his technical expertise in spatial data infrastructures and his commitment to building collaborations with colleagues around the world. We extend our condolences to his family and friends on this tragic loss.

Dates for the Memorial Services to celebrate Doug’s life have yet to be determined, but they are targeting the August/September timeframe and they will occur in Portland, Oregon and Reston Virginia. We will provide the additional information once it becomes available.
The family conveyed that if anyone would like to make a contribution, they wish that donations be sent to two different charities in Doug’s and his granddaughter Zoey’s honor.
