Executive Committee reviews progress

  Work in progress

The GEO Executive Committee, including the new representatives from Belize, France and the Republic of Korea, met in Geneva on 1-2 June. The Committee heard reports from, and gave guidance to, the various GEO ad hoc bodies; considered how best to strengthen the GEO Trust Fund; and started to prepare November’s GEO-VI Plenary meeting in Washington DC.

Key conclusions of the meeting included:

  • There is still an urgent need to populate the GEOSS registries with components and services; partly for this reason, the Committee agreed to extend the mandate of the GEOSS Common Infrastructure Initial Operating Capability (GCI IOC) Task Force until September.
  • The reconciliation process for the work plan, targets and performance indicators is making good progress and is on track to conclude by GEO-VI.
  • The Data Sharing Task Force has initiated its work, which is of central importance to the GEO process and the success of the 2010 Ministerial Summit.
  • To ensure the GEO process remains on track, the GEO community should recognize that the GEO Trust Fund requires annual cash contributions of CHF 4.5 million.
  • The C4 should remain as an informal coordination mechanism for sharing information across the Committees.
  • The Executive Committee will further explore the proposal made at GEO-V for the expansion of the Executive Committee’s membership and will submit a paper on this to GEO-VI.
  • A Task Force to help prepare for the 2010 Ministerial Summit will be established based on nominations from governments.

The full summary report of the meeting is available on the GEO web site. The Executive Committee’s next meeting will take place 21-22 September in Geneva.
