Next steps for Work Plan update
The three-year GEO Work Plan is updated every year by the Plenary. Initiating the process for the annual update, the Secretariat invited technical comments by 8 July 2009 on version Rev1.1 of the 2009-2011 Work Plan.
This version differs from the Rev 1 version circulated to the GEO community on 13 January 2009 primarily in that it incorporates changes in Task Leads and Points of Contact communicated to the GEO Secretariat through the March Task Sheet update. It also includes as an annex an updated “Guide to Work Plan Management” featuring a description of the steps required for engaging with Work Plan Tasks.
Consistent with the outcomes of the March/April Reconciliation Meeting held in Geneva, the Secretariat encouraged proposals for new Work Plan contributions on two specific themes: (i) production of information on ecosystem change, conditions and trends, in relation to their capacity to deliver sustainable ecosystem services in sufficient quantities to meet societal needs; and (ii) production of information on changes in the extent and severity of land degradation and desertification
Based on the technical comments that have been received, the Secretariat is now preparing Rev 1.2 of the 2009-2011 Work Plan. This version will be submitted to all Members and Participating Organizations for official review on 27 July.
Based on this official review, a Revision 2 of the Work Plan will be issued on 7 September, in time for the co-located Committee meetings in Melbourne and the 16th meeting of the Executive Committee in Geneva. Revision 2 will then be circulated along with other Plenary documents in early October and submitted for acceptance at the GEO-VI Plenary meeting.
