UIC meeting advances synergies with ADC and CBC
The 10th meeting of the User Interface Committee (UIC), organized and hosted by MINES ParisTech, was held in Sophia Antipolis, France on 26-27 February. The meeting reviewed the Committee’s major activities and discussed the way forward. Key topics included the UIC involvement in the ADC-led GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP) Scenarios, the joint UIC/CBC Call for Proposals (CFP), the UIC Activities Plan for 2009-2015, Tasks and activities that could potentially be highlighted at the 2010 Ministerial Summit, the GEO Work Plan, and the status of various Tasks being supported by the UIC.
Following a report by the Co-Chairs on the outcomes of the last UIC meeting in Bucharest and the GEO-V Plenary, the meeting agreed a UIC Draft Activity Plan and set up a team to initiate and implement it. A representative of the Architecture and Data Committee (ADC) presented the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP) Scenarios on Energy, Disasters and Air Quality, which were recognized as significant user-oriented projects. Presentations were also made on other Tasks under the new 2009-2011 Work Plan, in particular Task US-09-01a on “Identifying Synergies between Societal Benefit Areas”. Outcomes from this Task are to be reported to the next Plenary, with a full report expected in 2010.
The meeting also discussed a letter sent out by the GEO Secretariat Director on 13 February issuing a Call for Proposals relating to sub-Tasks US-09-01b and CB-09-01. The aim of this CfP is to help end-users apply Earth observations in their projects. Concept proposals are due by 4 June. Although no funding is available from GEO, the CBC and UIC may attempt to mobilize resources for identified projects.
The Committee plans to hold its next meeting on the occasion of the 33rd International Symposium on Remote Sensing of the Environment (ISRSE) in Stresa, Italy in early May.
