Kyoto hosts 3rd GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium
Recognizing the importance of an operational GEOSS for the Asia-Pacific region, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters, the Government of Japan hosted the 3rd GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium at the Kyoto Research Park on 4-6 February.
The Symposium explored how to strengthen collaboration on improving observation, prediction and data sharing in the fields of climate change, water resource management, ecosystem maintenance, and disasters under the central theme of “Cross-cutting data sharing in the Asia-Pacific Region”. The presentations are posted here.
Parallel sessions were devoted to each of these concerns. They were followed by interdisciplinary sessions which considered how to build upon existing and planned GEO efforts to establish efficient information delivery systems and improve awareness of the data, products and systems available through GEOSS.
The discussions explored cooperation and coordination among the different Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs), including Climate, Water and Disasters. They also examined how to promote the development of multi-purpose databases that can provide the coordinated and timely observation data required for operational use in the Asia-Pacific region with respect to ecosystems, climate change and disaster information.
The Symposium involved over 250 participants from 17 countries across Asia and Oceania, demonstrating the region’s strong commitment to GEOSS. The 4th GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium will be hosted by Indonesia. |
